Before you fax

  • Sign it by hand. A Form 8821 with an electronic signature image or a digitized handwritten signature can only be submitted online, at IRS.gov/Submit8821, and digital or typed signatures are not valid on a faxed form.
  • Tax professionals can get certain authorizations processed faster through the IRS Tax Pro Account.
  • These are the same fax numbers as for Form 2848; the IRS's CAF units handle both.
  • The IRS says these numbers may change without notice and lists updates at IRS.gov/Form8821.

Questions

Is Form 8821 the same as a power of attorney?

No. Form 8821 lets someone see or receive the taxpayer's information; Form 2848 lets them represent the taxpayer. They are faxed to the same numbers.

Can I fax a Form 8821 signed electronically?

No. The IRS only accepts electronically signed Forms 8821 online, at IRS.gov/Submit8821.

Which number do I use for Puerto Rico or another U.S. territory?

855-772-3156, the International CAF team, which also handles APO and FPO addresses and taxpayers outside the United States.

Do the numbers change?

They can. We compare them with the IRS instructions regularly; the date we last checked is at the bottom of this page.
