How to fax from an iPhone

An iPhone can't send a fax on its own: faxing needs a phone line that speaks the fax protocol. What it can do is hand your pages to a service that dials the fax machine for you. You can do that right here in Safari, without installing anything.

  1. Type the fax number, area code first.
  2. Tap “Take a photo” for paper pages, or “Add PDF or photos” to pick a file from Files or your photo library.
  3. Check the page count and the price, then tap Send and pay with Apple Pay or a card.
  4. Leave the page open or come back later. You'll see when it's delivered, with a receipt you can save.

Getting a clean photo of a paper page

Lay the page flat in good light, hold the phone directly above it and fill the frame with the page. Fax is black and white at a modest resolution, so sharp, evenly lit text matters far more than megapixels. For several pages, the scanner built into the Notes or Files app makes one tidy PDF you can add here.

Do I need a fax app?

No. Most fax apps in the App Store are free to download and then ask for a weekly or monthly subscription before sending. If you fax a few times a year, paying once per fax is simpler and usually cheaper.
