Before you fax

  • Check the top left of the first page of your notice: it names the IRS campus the notice came from. Fax to that campus's number.
  • If your notice has a response form, complete and sign it, say whether you agree or disagree, and put it first, followed by your supporting documents.
  • Reply by the date on the notice.
  • The IRS says uploading with its document upload tool is the fastest way to reply. You can also mail your reply to the address at the top left of the notice.
  • If you use an online fax service, the IRS asks you to understand its privacy and security policies.

How to send it without a fax machine

  1. Find the campus at the top left of your notice and its fax number in the table.
  2. Put the signed response form first, then your supporting documents.
  3. Scan or photograph every page, enter the number and add the pages.
  4. Send before the reply date, and keep the delivery receipt as proof.

Questions

What is the CP2000 fax number?

It depends on the IRS campus at the top left of your notice: Andover 877-477-9485, Atlanta 877-477-0967, Austin 877-477-0583, Holtsville 877-477-9599, Fresno 877-477-0962, Ogden 877-477-9640, Philadelphia 877-477-9602.

Can I use an online fax service to reply to a CP2000?

Yes. The IRS lists fax as a way to reply and asks you to understand an online fax service's privacy and security policies if you use one.

Do I need to amend my return?

Not if you agree with the notice and have nothing else to report: follow the notice's instructions instead.

Do the numbers change?

They can. We compare them with IRS.gov regularly; the date we last checked is at the bottom of this page.
