How to fax from Gmail

Gmail can't send a fax by itself: a fax has to be dialed to a fax machine over a phone line, and Gmail only sends email. To fax something you have in Gmail, save the attachment (or download the Google Doc as a PDF) and send it from here.

  1. Open the email and download the attachment. On a computer, hover over it and click the download arrow; on a phone, open it and save it to your files.
  2. For a Google Doc, open it and choose File, then Download, then PDF Document (.pdf).
  3. Enter the recipient's fax number here and add the saved file.
  4. Check the page count and the price, send, and keep the delivery result.

Can I send a fax by emailing a fax number from Gmail?

Only through an email-to-fax service: you email an address made from the fax number and the service faxes it. Those services need an account, and usually a monthly plan. Typing a fax number into Gmail's To field on its own sends nothing.

Is there a free way?

Free online fax sites exist, but most limit pages or add their own branding to the cover page. Here you pay once for the fax, see the price before sending, and pay only for pages that arrive.

Faxing several attachments together

Add each file in the order the recipient should read it. You can reorder or remove pages before sending, and everything goes as one fax.
